3.en.84 Animal sounds. From donkeys to birds: pío, pío, tweet, tweet

Do you remember the lovely braying donkey?

English: to bray

Spanish: rebuznar

Catalan: bramar

I am sure that if we recorded a British donkey and a Spanish one they would sound exactly the same, but the way different language mimic animal sounds is not the same, in fact , sometimes it is totally different.

Have a look at birds:

Spanish: pío, pío

Catalan: piu, piu

English: cheep cheep/tweet/chirp

Now you know why you can see a little bird in  Twitter

Roosters are pretty different too

Spanish: kikirikí

Catalan: cocorico

English: cock-a-doodle-doo

Some work for you . When animals are young they are called differently. Do you remember penguings and chicks?

Well, in this page, you will find a good selection of animals and their young. Have a look, learn the names , listen to the sound they make and do the test.

Did you learn any new words?

Did you find the page useful to learn vocabulary?

3.en.83 Sometimes things don’t turn out as planned

This week the two outings we had planned did not turn out exactly as expected. But that’s life isn’t it? Well, to begin with, we did not manage to reach the sea on Tuesday’s excursion. A fenced private property and a gate made us take the wrong way. However, if we look at the positive side of things, you had the opportunity to have a good time with friends and to enjoy nature. I forgot my camera, that explains why I cannot publish any pics in the blog until you send me some. This morning with Taylor, we practised narrating in groups what had happened. You did a good job and learnt a lot. Taylor and me had problems to remember what the English word for the sound donkeys make, but finally, with on line dictonary help, we got it! BRAY

So, while I wait for your homework and your pics from the donkeys we saw, I leave here in the blog a cute donkey braying desperately for food. Does it sound the same as the ones we heard during on the outing?

This morning you walked to la Caixa with Bernat, only to discover that it was the wrong day. The activity, taller d’interpretació poètica ,will be next week,Thursday the 7th of April. I apologize for mistaking the dates, but I am sure you enjoyed the walk with Bernat; it was a nice day today and he always has interesting stories to tell you.

Last year the poetry workshop was a success and I hope this year, we shall not miss it next Thursday, will be so too. Click here if you’d like to read what the students of 2nd ESO thought of it. I include a photo of the poetry festival that took place at la Caixa and a short video of Daryl and Xilin. This year it will be your turn.

These are  the first  narratives of the outing. They were fast to send them, well done!

HOMEWORK (Monday 4th April)

  • Can you find any mistakes, can you suggest any improvements?
  • Spelling?
  • Word choice?
  • Coherence?
  • Organization of ideas?
  • Paragraph structure?

Send your suggestions to the blog. On Monday we shall correct them together.

Have a nice weekend!

The outing.

Last Tuesday we went on an outing to “es port des Canonge” with two school buses. When we arrived we walked along some routes for about 30 minuts, but we saw two different routes and we got lost. We walked up the mountain to find the buses. When the teachers found the buses, we went back to the high school. We arrived at high school at quarter past one. From Palma to “port des Canonge” there’s approximately one hour by bus. The weather was sunny and hot. On the outing there were about one hundred students.

Port d’es Canonge outing:

The last tuesday we went to an excursion called “Port d’es Canonge”.We were 100 persons more or less and we took two buses. The weather was sunny and a little bit cloudy.
When we arrived to the roat we walked 35 minutes and later we took other way and in that moment we got lost in the top of the mountain. We were very tired when we found a flat area. In that moment all the teachers called to some mini-buses to take us from that place.
That excursion was very funy because you can talk and you can have fun with your friends but in some moments the excusrion was tired and boring.

The outing:
On Tuesday we went to an excursion to “Port des Canonge”.
We were about 100 people and we went with two buses.
The bus left us near the “farm of esporles”.
We started walking and we found a propriety that was closed by a fence.
Then we started to climb the mountain and we went to a wrong path and we got lost.

-The best thing of the excursion is that we did different things that all the other days. For example, talk a lot.

-And the worst thing is that we got lost and we were tired.

In one part of the way, there were two ways, and we take the wrong way. In one part of this way, we found a dead goat. A little bit later, we stoped and we lunched. Some of the techers went to search the way. We walked, and in one part, we found bones. The teachers decided we have to return. In the high school, we had free time, and we played and talked about the outing.
-The good point is that we do some different.
-The bad point is we were very tired.

3.en.82 Getting to know each other: new friends from 1st ESO A/ B and new teacher, Toni Martorell

Last week we developed a new personality for a day. We pretended to be tourists visiting Majorca from a different country and we split the class in two. We hosted some students from Toni Martorell’s group in our class, and we were guests in their class too.

Toni’s students interviewed us, and we also asked them questions. We wrote a paragraph about the new student we met and we also wrote some information about the country we pretended to come from. Here are some pics. We would like to do some more activities together. Here they can find our descriptions.

We made some mistakes, so we have tried to improve our writing and now we’ll upload our work to the blog. Tell us, if you still find mistakes.

HOPE TO SEE YOU AROUND AGAIN!

3.en.81 Taylor, acrostics, saving water, rain barrels, sprinklers and much more

Most probably you have forgotten than on the 30th of September 2010 (click here to go to that post), suspense was building up. We were expecting Taylor, our language assistant, and we did not know what she was going to be like. Before meeting her, we wondered what her personality and looks would be. these were the acrostics we used:

Tall

American

Young

Lively

Organized

Relaxed

Tough

Adventurous

Yankee

Leader

Optimistic

Rebel

Teaser

Artsy

Yuppy

Loving

Outspoken

Romantic

Taylor has been with us for 6 months, so now you can surely make a better acrostic with her name; an acrostic that really fits her. Choose from the purple, green or blue version the adjectives you think suit her best. You can use new ones too, or even better, write full sentences as the acrostic on water we read this morning.

Today we watched a video about water day, which was celebrated last Tuesday 22nd of March. We also read an acrostic with the word water that contained hints on how to save water.  Taylor also explained to us why the water acrostic was tipically American. Now you also know that it was not a poem written by British kids.

WHY?

WHAT WORDS WOULD A BRITISH STUDENT HAVE USED?

We have discovered that Taylor keeps two rain barrels in her backyard. I have found this video for you. We have to ask Taylor whether her rain barrels are like this one. Listen to it and check if you hear the words we learnt this morning:

safe water, resources, supply, reuse, gallon, fill up, backyard, spout, lid, drain, hose

Would a Majorcan “aljub” be the equivalent to Taylor’s backyard rain barrel?

Ritish, in his house in India, keeps a rain barrel in the roof to store and collect water.

We also learnt that Taylor washes the car in the front yard, using a pail and a sponge. She is not the only one to do so, Joan Sebastià uses a sponge and a bucket too. However, Pau Segui uses a hose  to wash the tyres, which means that he spends more water than Joan Sebastià.

Alvaro uses a very sophisticated machine. He might need to  bring a pic to show us what it is like.

Finally, people in our group use different systems to water the lawn, and different frequency too. Taylor waters the lawn every two days. Her mother usually takes care of that and she uses a hose.  Pau Campomar uses a sprinkler, he imitates very well the sound the sprinkler makes.  Well, we’ve learnt a lot about different ways to use water and to save it, haven’t we?

I expect your answers, acrostics and comments for Monday.

3.en.80 Sing along with English verbs and remember the tricky third person “s”

Verbs in English are quite easy. However, you keep forgetting to add  an “s” in the present simple for the third person singular: He/she/it. He lives, she likes, it rains… and so on. I have just corrected the paragraph you wrote about Toni’s students and discovered that you insist on forgetting that tricky “s”.

You are learning verbs  in Spanish with Emili, so we’ll revise a list of very common English verbs you all should know. Next post will be about irregular verbs, which are not tricky but need some extra work.

Watch this video and answer the questions:

Here follow some of the verbs that are mentioned in the video, Did you hear all of them?

  • be
  • see
  • feel
  • climb
  • sing
  • work
  • live
  • love
  • run
  • go
  • give
  • write
  • sing
  • dance
  • swim
  • rest
  • sleep
  1. Are there any irregular verbs in the list? Which ones?
  2. Write the simple past and the past participle.
  3. Can you add any more verbs to the list ?
  4. What are the verbs  mentioned in the video associated with using your imagination?
  5. In the video you will see some nouns that are turned into verbs? The first one is bat. Can you add three more?
  6. What are the examples given of transitive verbs. Verbs with an object?
  7. What is the verb used in the video to define what a subject is?

Copy your anwers in your notebook and post them to the blog. There is no need to repeat answers unless you have something new to say or want to correct errors from your classmates.
