2.en.67 Some pics from the outing

Which part of the outing did you like best?

2.en.66 Art Nouveau, Catalan Modernism: From the Gran Hotel in Palma to the cemetery of Son Sang in Sóller

In the first term we learnt many things about our city, Palma. This term we are working on a different topic: “familiy, relationships and friends”. However, by now you must have realised that learning is a never ending process and that part of learning is establishing connections and links between what we already know and what we have just discovered.

In the outing of the 21st February,  we shall compare Palma and Sóller. The city of Palma has many examples of Modernism. We have been many times to the Gran Hotel. Last time, not even a week ago, to a drama workshop, don’t you remember?

Well the beautiful building of the Gran Hotel, is one of the most emblematic examples of Catalan modernism architecture in Palma. It is a work of Lluís Domènech i Montaner, an influential architect of this style, whose best known figure is Antoni Gaudí .

In Sóller you will see many examples of fine modernist architecture,  so you will be able to find some of its features.

In this video from you tube, you can see some of the most outstanding modernist buildings in Palma.

In groups, you will explore the town of Sóller and some of its buildings. As a whole group, our first stop will be at the cemetery. I will ask you to look for the sculptures of Josep Llimona and also to find some of features of Art Nouveau style in the graves and ironwork of  Son Sang.

  • Typical decorative elements  of Art Nouveau sytle include:

  • leaf and tendril motifs
  • Organic forms
  • Floral and other plant-inspired motifs
  • Flowing curvilinear forms
  • Whiplash patterns
  • Asymmetrical shapes
  • Extensive use of arches and curved forms
  • flowers, insects and other zoomorphs
  • Hair and curvaceous bodies of beautiful women
  • Curved glass
  • Mosaics
  • Stained glass
  • ironwork

After the outing, you will have time to visit several websites that will help you understand better what you saw. We’ll spend a couple of lessons working together in class.

These are some of the  sites and on line resources we shall be using:

  1. An excellent introduction of Modernism in Sóller from  El Diario de Mallorca. There is a section where we can contribute with pics and comments, so I will ask you to participate by sending your best shots.

2. A gallery of photos in Soller net, where non professional photographers exhibit different Art Nouveau motifs

3.nformation about the vintage train to Soller and Soller train station

4. The train journey. The girl cannot pronounce Sóller very well, can’t she?

5. A video about Art Nouveau, where you can see how  the same artistic and architectural style is found in different countries and how it is called in different languages: German, English, Catalan, French and Spanish, as well as some of its most outstanding artists (Gaudi, Mucha, Klimt, Lievemont)

2.en.65 On trees, leaves, plurals and virtual visits to Sóller Botanic Garden

On Monday February 21st you shall visit Sóller Botanic garden and learn lots of things about plants and trees. By now you should know that trees can be decidious or evergreen depending on whether they lose their leaves or not.

The plural of ” leaf” is “leaves”

similarly, the plural of “life” is “lives”; “knive” “knives”; “wife” “wives”

Here follow some  leaves. Match the leaf with its animation and look for the translation in Catalan and Spanish

a) beech b)maple c) oak, d) ash e)chestnut

One of the evergreen trees that you will find in the botanic garden is the Quercus Ilex.  Read this information from Wikipedia

Quercus ilex, the Holm Oak or Holly Oak is a large evergreen oak native to the Mediterranean region. It takes its name from holm, an ancient name for holly.[1] It is known by the names azinheira in Portugueseencina in Spanishcarrasca or alzina in Catalančesvina in Croatianis-siġra tal-ballut in Malteseand chêne vert or yeuse in French. It is a member of the white oak section of the genus, with acorns that mature in a single summer.

In the Botanic Garden, plants and trees are organised in different terraces and sections. You can visit the Botanic garden web site and have a look at how the plants are organised. It is an exceelent web site and you can choose the language: Catalan, Spanish, English, German and French. After the outing, you can visit the garden on line, it is a way to revise what you will learn.

  • The M4 section corresponds to the Oak forest flora, there you will find 4 evergreen oaks, Quercus Ilex. Draw and/or take a pic of the tree and of one leave.
  • How many terraces did you visit? Go to the site and find out.
  • Which of the terraces did you like best?

Let’s finish the post with some musical leaves: leaves that are green and turn to brown. It’s a very old simple song. I hope you like it.

Leaves that are green , by Simon and Garfunkel

I was twenty-one years when I wrote this song.
I’m twenty-two now but I won’t be for long
Time hurries on.
And the leaves that are green turn to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

Once my heart was filled with the love of a girl.
I held her close, but she faded in the night
Like a poem I meant to write.
And the leaves that are green turn to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

I threw a pebble in a brook
And watched the ripples run away
And they never made a sound.
And the leaves that are green turned to brown,
And they wither with the wind,
And they crumble in your hand.

Hello, Hello, Hello, Hello,
Good-bye, Good-bye, Good-bye, Good-bye,
That’s all there is.

  1. Did you like the song?

Problem words: wither, crumble

Post your comments to the blog. for Wednesday 1st March

2.en.64 Outing to Sóller: 21st February 2011

Next Monday we are going on an outing to Sóller. Today we are going to make groups and talk about the aims of the outing. This is the first post of a series of 3 that will give you instructions on what you have to do and what we expect from your work. These are some of the words that you will find in your visit. I’m sure that after the outing to Sóller you will recognize most of them.

The teacher will give you a map and a dossier You must bring something to take notes in ( a notebook is better to take notes than loose sheets of paper) and something to write (pen or pencil). Remember that you will need a camera and something to eat and drink during the morning.

After the outing, each group must produce a power point presentation and present it orally to the class

  • The power point must have 11  slides.
  • Each slide will reflect  an aspect of the visit.
  • You must include one or two pics per slide, a catchy caption and a few lines.
  • A power point presentation is not meant to be read, but to provide visual support for your oral presentation.
  • You must hand in a written description of each slide (30 to 50 words) but do not include the written descriptions in the part of the slide that you will show to the class.
  • Hand in the slide description to the teacher and include it as “notes”. This part will be assessed as a writing exercise
